Insurance 101: Tips and Tricks to Choosing the Right Policy

Since my parents always added me to their auto insurance policy when I was a teenager, I never learned how to make educated insurance policy decisions. When I moved out of my parents house at the age of 25 and it was time to get my own policy, I was overwhelmed with all of the decisions I had to make. Thankfully, my parents were eager to teach me what each insurance coverage option meant and what the best choices were for me. I learned a lot about insurance during this experience, and I am eager to share what I learned with others on my new blog. I also plan to include many tips on choosing health and homeowners insurance policies, so check back often if you want to learn a little more about insurance!

If you're about to get Medicare health insurance you need to decide whether you want original Medicare or Medicare Advantage. There are some key differences and benefits that you should consider, to make your final selection.

When choosing between original Medicare or Medicare Advantage you should think about your lifestyle. Here are some tips that will help you decide which Medicare Plan is right for you.

Think About Coverage

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage cover the same things. However, Medicare Advantage goes a bit further than the original Medicare coverage. This means that you will get coverage for vision, dental, and even fitness. If you're interested in these additional benefits, then a Medicare Advantage plan may be what you need.

Do You Travel Often?

If you travel often across the country then this can impact your Medicare coverage. When you have original Medicare coverage you can see providers anywhere throughout the country where Medicaid is accepted.

However, when you have a Medicaid Advantage plan you will be restricted to providers that are in the network of the Medicaid Advantage program. When you travel to some areas you may not be able to access Medicaid Advantage Plus because it may be more difficult to find a provider within the Medicare Advantage network. If this is going to be a problem it is often better to stick with original Medicare.

Switching Between Options

The benefits of a Medicaid Advantage plan are that they network with providers to negotiate price points and this helps you to save money. If cost is a huge consideration for you then a Medicare Advantage plan may be just right.

However, as discussed before, even with all these savings this type of coverage may not be right for your lifestyle. The good thing about Medicare coverage is that you can switch between original Medicare and Medicare Advantage at any given time. This means that if your life situation changes, you can always switch to an option that is better for you at any given time.

For example, if you currently travel a lot you should take advantage of original Medicare. If you plan to stop traveling very soon and would like to take advantage of Medicare advantage then you can easily switch.

Get the Right Plan

Selecting the right Medicare plan need not be a challenge. Just choose the Medicare plan that is right for your current lifestyle and if things change in the future you can always switch between plans.
